What’s an HVAC system?

Sometimes, it’s best to begin with the basics. To understand why HVAC systems might contribute to indoor air contamination, it’s important to first explain what they are and how they work. Without a clear understanding of their components and functions, it’s difficult to understand how these systems, meant to ensure air quality and comfort, could potentially become a source of indoor pollution. So, let’s start this article with a simple question: what’s an HVAC system?

HVAC Systems And Their Components

An HVAC system (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning system), is a mechanical system used to control the temperature and humidity within indoor spaces. These systems are composed of several components, including air ducts, filters, blowers and coils, all working to heat or cool the air and circulate it throughout a building. Ventilation plays a crucial role by bringing in fresh outdoor air, maintaining a balanced and comfortable environment. By regulating airflow and temperature, HVAC systems are essential for creating comfortable and safe indoor spaces.

HVAC Contamination

But what happens if these systems are not regularly maintained from a hygienic point of view? HVAC systems become contaminated over time: outdoor pollution penetrates the system and, through the colonization of internal surfaces by microbiological agents (particularly mold), it multiplies. At this point, if the air systems are not properly managed through regular HVAC inspections and corrective actions (when necessary), dangerous contaminants will spread into the indoor environment, putting human health at risk. Moreover, inefficiencies and waste caused by a damaged, weakened, or slowed systems (such as clogged filters, air leaks, etc.) must also be taken into account. While it’s not accurate to say that all indoor pollution stems from this, it’s certainly true that indoor air quality would be significantly less concerning without HVAC contamination. If you’ve read our article so far, it should be clear that HVAC systems play a crucial role in ensuring that people breathe clean air every day—in schools, workplaces, supermarkets, and all the spaces we frequent in our daily lives. Poor HVAC hygiene can quickly lead to serious health risks for building occupants. What’s an HVAC system? It’s a way to live a safer and healthier life!
